How to choose the right above counter basin

Above counter (vessel) basins sit entirely on top of the vanity, so the bowl becomes a visible design feature rather than something tucked below the benchtop line. Because the whole basin is exposed, tap height matters more than with other installation types - you'll usually need a taller freestanding or wall-mounted tap to clear the raised rim. Measure your vanity depth against the basin's footprint, leaving enough clearance at the front edge for comfortable use, and check whether the model has a pre-drilled tap hole or needs a separate wall-mounted tap.

Because the basin sits proud of the benchtop, above counter styles pair well with a shallower vanity than undermount options need. Round and oval bowls are the easiest to keep clean and suit most bathroom layouts; square and rectangle shapes read more architectural and work well in larger, linear vanity runs. Ceramic remains the most practical everyday material; artificial stone and quartz options add a soft matte finish that hides water spots better than high-gloss ceramic.
