How to choose the right basin

Above counter (also called countertop or vessel) basins sit on top of the vanity and suit freestanding tapware; undermount basins sit beneath a stone or laminate benchtop for an easy-clean flush edge; semi-recessed basins partially drop into the benchtop to save depth in tight bathrooms; wall hung basins fix directly to the wall with no vanity at all, which suits powder rooms and compact ensuites. Freestanding basins on a pedestal or leg work well as a feature piece. Confirm your benchtop cutout size and tap hole configuration (single hole, three-hole, or no tap hole) before ordering.

Material affects both look and maintenance. Ceramic is the most common choice - durable, easy to clean, and available in the widest range of shapes and colours. Artificial stone and quartz basins offer a smoother, more contemporary matte finish and resist chipping well. Concrete basins bring a raw, textural look but need periodic resealing in hard-water areas. Stainless steel suits commercial and laundry-adjacent applications where impact resistance matters. Whatever the material, check the basin's overall footprint against your benchtop cutout, and order a matching waste, bottle trap and overflow ring if your basin doesn't come with one included.
