How to choose the right close-coupled toilet

Close-coupled suites are usually the fastest, lowest-cost way to replace an existing toilet, because they don't require altering a concealed cistern or wall frame. Match the trap type first — an S-trap outlet points down through the floor, a P-trap outlet points through the wall — then check the set-out distance from the wall to the waste centre against the suite's specification. Because the whole unit sits above floor level with no in-wall components, it also suits rental properties and budget renovations where minimising plumbing disruption matters.

Beyond fit, look at flush volume and pan shape. Dual-flush cisterns (a full flush and a reduced flush) are standard and help manage water use over time. Pan shape affects both comfort and cleaning: a rimless bowl removes the overhanging rim where grime traditionally collects, while a standard rimmed pan is often cheaper. Seats are typically sold separately, so confirm the seat's fixing style matches the pan before ordering a replacement.
