How to choose the right cover plate

Cover plates, sometimes called tilers mistake plates, are the simplest fix for a hole that's larger than needed, whether it's left over from a relocated tap, an old floor waste that's been capped, or a tiler's cut that ran wide. Measure the full diameter of the hole and choose a plate with an outer diameter comfortably larger on all sides, so it sits flush against the tile or wall surface and fully conceals the gap underneath.

Because these plates are visible once fitted, choose a finish that matches nearby tapware or a floor waste grate, whether that's a simple chrome, a darker matte black or gun metal, or a warmer brushed brass. Installation is generally straightforward, with the plate either screwing or clipping into place over the hole, and doesn't usually require retiling, replastering or any specialist tools.
