How to choose the right push button

A floor cistern push button screws into the lid of a close-coupled cistern and operates the internal flush valve mechanism directly beneath it. Because the button threads onto that mechanism, replacement buttons need to match both the thread size of your cistern lid and the type of flush valve fitted — single-flush and dual-flush mechanisms use different button designs, so check which type your existing cistern uses before ordering. Round and square shapes are largely a styling choice once the mechanism match is confirmed.

Special care and accessible toilets often use a different button style — typically larger, more visible, and sometimes colour-coded — to make operation easier for users with reduced dexterity or vision. If you're specifying for a care facility, aged care setting or accessible bathroom, check the relevant facility's requirements or Australian Standards guidance for that installation rather than choosing a standard residential button. For a straightforward household repair, turning off the water supply before removing the old button is good practice even though most buttons unscrew without draining the cistern.
