How to choose the right hose
Match the hose to its application before choosing a finish. A toilet cistern typically takes a 450mm to 500mm hose running from the isolation valve to the cistern's inlet, while mixer taps are often sold with their own matched hose pair at a different length. Measure the actual distance between your fitting points rather than assuming a standard length will work, and check the thread size at both ends — G1/2 (half-inch BSP) is the common Australian standard, but confirming it against your existing valve avoids a mismatch.
Where the hose will be visible, such as under an open vanity or an exposed toilet connection, choose a finish that matches your tapware rather than defaulting to plain chrome. Brushed brass, brushed bronze, brushed nickel and gunmetal are now widely available to coordinate with coloured tapware ranges. Because these hoses carry a constant water connection, it's worth periodically checking them for wear, kinking or corrosion at the fittings and replacing them if any of these signs appear, rather than waiting for a failure.
