How to choose the right insert basin

Insert basins (also called semi-inset basins) sit partway into a cut opening in the benchtop, with part of the bowl exposed above the surface and part recessed below it. This gives a more integrated look than a fully above-counter basin while keeping the simpler installation of a drop-in fitting rather than a true undermount. Before ordering, get the exact cutout template from the product specifications, since the benchtop needs to be cut to match the basin's rim shape precisely - this is usually done by your stone or joinery supplier once the basin is selected.

Because part of the basin sits below the benchtop, insert basins need less usable bench depth than fully above-counter styles, which helps in narrower vanities. They pair well with standard-height mixer taps since the bowl doesn't sit as proud of the surface. Gloss ceramic is easiest to keep looking new day to day; matte finishes show fewer water spots but need slightly more care with abrasive cleaners. Confirm the tap hole position and count before the benchtop is cut, since this can't easily be changed afterward.
