How to choose the right insulation board

Insulation boards sit beneath the heating cable and reduce the amount of heat that's lost downward into the subfloor or the space below, which means more of the cable's output goes into warming the surface you actually walk on. This matters most over concrete or above unheated spaces, where heat can otherwise escape before it reaches the floor finish.

Boards come in 6mm and 10mm thicknesses — thicker generally insulates better but adds slightly more to the finished floor height, so check this against door clearances and adjoining floor levels. Boards are laid over the subfloor, fixed down with the matching screws and washers, and joints are reinforced with grid cloth tape before the heating cable is laid on top.
