How to choose the right toilet

A back-to-wall suite needs an accessible cistern space against the wall; a wall-hung pan needs a concealed cistern frame installed inside the wall before tiling, which suits new builds or full renovations more than a straight swap. Close-coupled suites are the simplest like-for-like replacement for an existing toilet in most homes. Measure your set-out distance from the wall to the waste outlet centre and match it to the pan's specified set-out before ordering, since this varies between models and is not universal.
Once the format is settled, check whether your existing waste is an S-trap (outlet through the floor) or a P-trap (outlet through the wall) and buy a pan built for that connection.
