How to choose the right undermount basin

Undermount basins are fixed to the underside of the benchtop, so the cut edge of the stone or solid surface is visible at the basin opening rather than a ceramic rim. This gives the cleanest, most seamless look of any installation type, and makes wiping water directly off the benchtop into the basin much easier since there's no raised lip to catch it. Undermount fixing needs a rigid benchtop material - stone, engineered stone or solid surface - since laminate benchtops generally aren't suitable for undermount installation without specific edge banding.

Because the basin is fixed from below with adhesive and mechanical clips, undermount installation is usually done by your stone fabricator at the same time the benchtop is templated and cut, rather than by the plumber. Confirm the basin model before the benchtop is templated, since the cutout is sized to the specific basin's rim. Check the tap hole position is confirmed in the benchtop template too - undermount basins are usually paired with deck-mounted tapware drilled through the stone rather than through the basin itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can undermount basins go under a laminate benchtop?
Generally no - undermount fixing relies on a rigid benchtop edge, which laminate doesn't reliably provide without specialised edge treatment. Stone, engineered stone and solid surface benchtops are the standard choice for undermount basins.
Who installs an undermount basin - the plumber or the stone fabricator?
The stone or solid-surface fabricator typically fixes the basin underneath the benchtop as part of templating and installation, since the cutout and fixing points are specific to the benchtop material. The plumber then connects the tapware and waste afterward.
Are undermount basins harder to clean than above counter basins?
The opposite - the flush edge means there's no rim to trap water or grime, so wiping the benchtop surface pushes water straight into the basin. This is one of the main reasons undermount is popular for busy family bathrooms.
