How to choose the right vanity top

Material is the first decision. Ceramic tops are the most common, cost-effective option, with a durable glazed surface that resists staining and is easy to clean. Stone tops, whether engineered or natural, give a denser, more premium feel with better resistance to scratches and chips, and are often chosen for feature vanities or higher-traffic family bathrooms. Poly (polymarble) tops are lighter and more affordable again, commonly used where budget is the main driver, such as rental properties or secondary bathrooms.

Once you've chosen a material, match the top's exact width and depth to your vanity cabinet — a top that's even slightly the wrong size won't sit flush or will overhang awkwardly. Check the basin style (above-counter or undermount) and tap hole position against your plumbing rough-in and desired look; a centre tap hole suits a single basin positioned centrally, while an offset hole suits vanities with drawers to one side. If you're replacing an existing top, measure the current one directly rather than relying on the cabinet's nominal size, since manufacturing tolerances can vary slightly between brands.
